Western states' climate laws: the cost of inaction
If Western states don't substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they could face billions of dollars in health care and other related costs by 2020, according to reports by economists for the University of Oregon's Climate Leadership Initiative's Program on Climate Economics. Washington, Oregon and New Mexico will probably face associated annual costs of $3.8 billion, $3.3 billion and $3.2 billion by 2020, respectively, if they don't rein in greenhouse gas emissions, logging and other factors that drive climate change, according to reports released Monday.

Green Tips

Switch to Energy Efficient Bulbs
ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.

Carry Your Own Grocery Bags
Carrying your own grocery bags will make less usage of the bags at the grocery stores. This way, you reduce the usage of plastic bags helping the environment.

Conserve energy
Conserve energy by purchasing major appliances with an Energy Star rating. Compared to a 1990 model, an Energy Star-qualified refrigerator would save enough electricity to light a home for more than four and a half months.

Don't idle your car when not required
People usually stop in their cars and have chitchat with their friends. This way, your car uses gas while it idles. Instead, park your car in the parking lot, stop your car and then talk as long as you want.

Don't run tap water while you brush your teeth.
Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. You'll conserve up to five gallons of water per day -- which could add up to 1.5 billion gallons that could be saved across the country each day -- more than enough for all of New York City.

Buy locally
Dont travel lots of distance just to find one item to purchase. Find farmers markets, family farms, and other sources close by to your place. This way, you will spend less on gas, thus saving some money for yourself and also help the environment.

A little warmer, a little cooler.
About 47 percent of the average household's annual energy bills stem from heating and cooling. Every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer will reduce air conditioning bills by about 2 percent. Lowering the temperature by one degree in winter will save you 3 percent on heating bills. Regular maintenance and a tune up every two or three years will keep your heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, system operating efficiently, saving energy and money. A programmable thermostat -- excellent for a family that spends a good part of the day at work or school -- will shave 10 percent off your bill.
